Solo Hobbit's '67 hardtop deluxe "Else"

History:
I bought this bus from the previous owner in Kentucky in about 1986. I drove it up to Vermont when I moved here a year later. It was last run about 1994, when I pulled the engine to use in my beater bug.  It will  be going for parts for "Smial Poni", so I will always have some of it with me.  The name "Else" (pronounced "ell-see") had something to do with the bus taking me elsewhere (i.e. away from college).

Basics:
It is not currently registered or inspected. The true mileage is unknown.

Here is the complete M-plate:
20 D
425 025 114 130
UK 2412 121872 7074677

Manufactured December 20 1966. M130 indicated a deluxe without sunroof and skylight windows (hardtop).  M025 = lap belt mounts.  M114 = 6 popout side windows.

There is no original documentation.

Body:
The key concept here is rust. There is a good deal of lower rust including the bottom of the exterior panels along the side and along the outside edges of the cargo floor. There are also rust spots on the roof, on the sides where scratches have deteriorated, and the pop-out window frames. The left rear corner was hit and a very rough patch was installed to hold the rear light. The exterior mirrors are gone and some after market non-VW mirrors were installed by the previous owner in a real hack job. The front right windshield is broken.

Interior:
The interior panels and upholstery are not serviceable. The center seat is gone. A oil temp gauge was installed in the dash. The steering wheel is cracked and marginally serviceable.

Misc.:
The original washer squirt bottle is missing. I don't know if the lights work.

Engine:
I have the original "H" block engine that came with it, but took it out shortly afterwards and installed a dual port engine from a '71 bus. The "H" block ran okay, but should be rebuilt in any case.

Tranny and Clutch:
The tranny and clutch worked well when it was last run.   I plan to use the front beam and tranny with gear boxes on my project.

Suspension, Brakes, Tires:
I started to do some brake work on the bus as a forerunner to getting it going again. The tires are fair, but have sat in the same spot for some time, so there may be problems.
