Solo Hobbit's '71 1/2 baywindow "Alfi"

Alfi front low resolution.jpg (27202 bytes) I call my second bus Alfi a '71 1/2 because it was a bus originally sold in Europe and has '72 taillights and non-removable engine skirt but it had an original upright AE engine.   I have since lost the uncommon engine tin which fit the upright engine to the later body.

Alfi at Lake ItascaAs the story goes, Alfi was originally used on the German Railway as a maintenance vehicle.   It had a device for recording the time and speed of the vehicle mounted on the front dashboard, which I still have.  Two photographers bought it and converted it into a camper.  They shipped it over to Central America and made a trip up to Chicago where they sold it and where I bought it from an intermediate owner.  I believe it was the German photographers who gave it the name Alfi, which I kept.

Alfi was a good bus and served me well for several years.  It really was a utility vehicle, and I never did much to fix the body up, although I kept the mechanical running okay.  One day the steering box fell off due to the amount of rust, so I saved as many parts as I could and the rest was sent to the crusher.
