Solo Hobbit's '71 1/2 baywindow "Alfi"
I call my second bus Alfi a '71 1/2 because it was a bus originally sold in Europe and has '72 taillights and non-removable engine skirt but it had an original upright AE engine. I have since lost the uncommon engine tin which fit the upright engine to the later body. |

Alfi was number 2322042394.
As the story goes, Alfi was originally used on the German Railway as a maintenance vehicle. It had a device for recording the time and speed of the vehicle mounted on the front dashboard, which I still have. Two photographers bought it and converted it into a camper. They shipped it over to Central America and made a trip up to Chicago where they sold it and where I bought it from an intermediate owner. I believe it was the German photographers who gave it the name Alfi, which I kept.
Alfi was a good bus and served me well for several years. It really was a utility vehicle, and I never did much to fix the body up, although I kept the mechanical running okay. One day the steering box fell off due to the amount of rust, so I saved as many parts as I could and the rest was sent to the crusher.
